The hallmark is stamped on gold and silver jewellery made in Scotland. The three-turreted castle sign is also the symbol used by the City of Edinburgh Council. Mr Milligan suggested a design that would illustrate a "one world" theme, featuring a revolving globe and symbol that suggested a link between the past and the future. Yesterday, the gold link was added to the chain, which was first worn in 1899 after being created by Messrs Brook & Son of George Street.
