#coldfusion on IRC

Posted by: charlie griefer

just wanted to do my (small) part to raise awareness of a coldfusion resource that really should be on everybody's radar.

#coldfusion on IRC's DALnet server.

for those of you not familiar with IRC (internet relay chat), it's basically a chat room. IRC is an older technology, so i'll be the first to admit that the interface is somewhat antiquated and the commands are a bit archaic. however, once you get over that learning curve and get comfortable with it, you can be chatting in real time with a lot of folks who love coldfusion and love to help out.

yes, there's a good amount of off-topic talk (and sometimes it's not always... what you'd call "clean"), but when the coldfusion questions are asked, there's usually somebody who is more than willing to break away from the current topic of discussion and do what they can to help out.

if you're on windows, you can download mIRC (sorry, i'm not sure what mac IRC clients exist or which one(s) to recommend) and connect to DALnet (/server irc.dal.net) and /join #coldfusion once you connect.

if you experience any issues with getting the software set up or getting connected, feel free to drop a comment and i'll do what i can to help get the issue resolved.

look forward to chatting with each and every one of you. well... you... you in the back there with your hand stuck down the front of your pants. not so much you. but the rest of you, definitely.

EDIT: in addition to #coldfusion, DALnet is also home to #fusebox, #cfflex, #transfer, #cfeclipse, #cfosx, #machii, #tartan, #reactor, #coldspring, and #modelglue.

if a channel for your favorite topic doesn't exist (and it doesn't have to be code-related), go ahead and start one! :)

Moderation is on, so your entries won't show up until a moderator approves them. Verification is on, so you must include an email address and verify it before your comments will appear.
Continuing the discussion ...

Conversation is a very good IRC client for the Mac.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to hop in the channel sometime.

IRC. Antiquated. Archaic. Wha?

I can remember wasting a lot of time on IRC... now I feel antiquated myself... :)

Anyone know if the mach-ii channel has any activity? I'll have to see if that'll go through our firewall here...

Ditto - Conversations is a good program to use. I've tried others but the UI is the cleanest.

Been a while since I've been on, as I find it hard to work and be on the IRC at the same time, but NO DOUBT it's probably the best resource I can think of for real-time help with CF!

Wait...you mean sometime we actually talk about ColdFusion?

Colloquy is a great Mac IRC program - colloquy.info

The #coldfusion channel bot is written in ColdFusion (as an event gateway). It let's you leave messages for people who aren't currently on the channel as well as standard IRC fare like !seen seancorfield and some CF-specific stuff like !fn evaluate and !tag cfabort (looks stuff up in LiveDocs for you).
